Metals
Metals are important to the craft and development of many items in Lendahnna’s history. Even from very early time Mortals have been gifted items of various metals from the Gods. Here is a non-exhaustive list of some of those metals, their properties and how they are used in Lendahnna.
Magical
Some metals are inherently bound with magic of various kinds. Some Mundane metals can also be used as reagents in crafting and enchantments, but the magical metals hold some properties innately. Most of them are hard to come by, or are alloys that have taken time to perfect.
Mithral
Perhaps the most iconic of magical metals in Lendahnna. This metal was found and developed by the Elves early into their time upon the material. Typically possessing a bluish silver color this metal is also extremely light while maintaining incredible strength. It makes for wonderful weapons and armor. While it can be used an enchantment metal, it serves better as a base rather than a metal to inlay. Most of the Mithral in Lendahnna has been mined and therefore finding it is extremely rare and new objects crafted from it tend to be repurposed from older metal.
Adamantine
Adamantine is another very prominent magical metal within Lendahnna. This one can only be found under the mountains of Oruk’s Mir. As such it has been largely monopolized by the Dwarves. Unlike Mithral, a large amount of Adamantine still is present to be harvested but is safeguarded by the Mortals in charge of it’s mining. Most Adamantine is used for building and defenses but can also make some of the strongest weapons and armor. It is a reddish coloration and is very dense causing it to be heavier than most metals. Small amounts can be used for inlaying enchantments but is best used as a base material.
Cold Iron
Cold Iron is the first of the magical Alloys to be created by Mortals. During the early stages of The War, those not blessed with Mithral or Adamantine saw need for a metal that could defend themselves against Demons, Devils and the undead. Cold Iron was the product of their efforts. This Iron is forged at a low temperature while infused with various gem dusts with magic channeled into it as it is tempered. Cold Iron is used for weapons and restraints. It does not serve much if any purpose as armor. It is slightly heavier than Iron itself and is a bit darker in color.
Darksteel
Another magical Alloy is Darksteel. This metal alloy is forged deep in the Black rivers of Hell, within the City of Dis. The Infernal metal takes after its name and is very black with cracks of dusted silvers. The metal itself is infused with damned magical energy and Brimstone. Darksteel is very versatile able to be used for construction, weapons, armor, and enchantments. It is the primary metal used by the army of Hell. Powerful artifacts have made their way to Lendahnna, as well as the smuggling of the metal itself leading Mortals to have access to it in small amounts.
Celestial Gold
Celestial Gold is perhaps the most rare of all the magical metals on Lendahnna. It can only be created from an intense forging process with the blood of Angels. Most of the Celestial Gold upon Lendahnna has been gifted long ago from the Gods or Angels themselves. This metal can be used for anything but is best suited as an enchantment inlay or smaller magical objects.
Mercurite
Mercurite, or sometimes also referred to as Mercurial Silver, comes from The Astral Sea. Its exact source is unknown, but the most common method involves using the Mercurial Sea to shift other metals into Mercurite. This metal cannot be used for armor or construction, and rarely for weapons. That said, it is incredibly accepting of magical infusions. It is even capable of enhancing a casters catalytic capability.
Cobalt
While it possesses great qualities, Cobalt is the most stubborn of all the magical metals on Lendahnna. It is not particularly hard to acquire, residing in veins on the upper layers of the Underdark, but it is very temperamental in its forging process. The bright blue metal is only used by master smiths as a way to enhance other metals. Also despite its color it can be dyed. Making it the perfect metal to take a weapon, armor, or enchanted item up to a slightly stronger state.
Shaded Lead
Some think that Darksteel is the most sinister of the metals, they would be wrong. In the Shadowfell there is a form of Lead that naturally forms called Shaded Lead. Named as such due the slow infusion of the drained souls that seep into the earth. Shaded Lead is pitch black and is resistant to all forms of magic. In fact it can nullify The Arcane Plane. Its harvesting is very rare and few are even able to come into contact with the metal without suffering ill effects.
Mundane
While these metals can be infused with magic to become magical, some easier than others, by default they do not have a magical property. Most of these metals are used in everyday life on Lendahnna and mirror for the most part the real world counterparts.
Gold
Gold is primarily used as a metal for currency and adornments, but is strong enough to be enchanted into weapons and armor. Part of its value is held in that all gold is said to have been placed on Lendahnna as a gift to Mortals during The War for their efforts to assist the Gods.
Silver
Silver is used both as currency but also as the primary enchantment metal by artificers. It is very lightweight and can be used in tandem with most other metals as well. Silver is still somewhat plentiful upon Lendahnna but there are regions where it has been mined out to completion.
Platinum
The rarest of all the Mundane metals. Platinum is rarely used as anything other than currency or mundane objects of opulence. The metal is fairly resistant to magical impacts and is difficult to work with. This makes the limited supply the perfect object for high currencies on Lendahnna.
Copper
This brownish metal is the second most common on Lendahnna. It is primarily used for currency and trade or for the production of Bronze. It does receive raw arcane energies well and has been used to channel arcane batteries in institutional and infrastructural enchantment.
Bronze
An alloy of Copper and Tin, Bronze was foundational to the efforts of early Mortals. While Iron has always been in higher supply than Bronze as a raw ore, Copper and as thus Bronze as been easier to work with. Early weapons and armor were constructed from Bronze rather than Iron and Steel as is the case today.
Lead
An extremely dense and dark metal. Lead serves one great purpose in Lendahnna and that is that it blocks magical efforts of most kinds. Particularly Lead is great at stopping Divination magics in their tracks. As such it cannot be used for enchantment itself.
Iron
Iron is the most plentiful metal on Lendahnna. It can be found in every corner of every continent. It is very durable and for a long period of time was the best form of metal for Mortals to use for weapons, armor, and basic construction. Over time the development of Steel has taken over as the most used metal due to it’s reinforcement. Iron is also strong enough to be a base for enchantment, but cannot be used as an inlay itself.
Steel
Of all the alloys and metals to grace Lendahnna the discovery of Steel is perhaps the greatest mundane technological revolution the plane has ever seen. Using forging methods of carbon and iron together the strength of Iron was doubled. This material can be used for everything except as an inlay metal. Most modern armies are supplied with Steel equipment. Though due to how common it is, some Mortals may still refer to it as ‘Iron’.
Brass
This secondary Copper alloy of it and Zinc forms a metal better suited to alchemical resistance. Brass is particularly resistant to magical liquids and acids. As such it is primarily used in such spaces, but it can also be used to make weapons and other objects, or inlay enchantments.
Minerals
This is a non-exhaustive list of some Minerals that are present on the Planes of Existence and Lendahnna. These typically do not get formed into anything other than dust or solid brick or rock. They cannot be turned into metals by themselves, but can be used in enchantments as well as infusing other metal. While there are mundane minerals they are no different than our real world and would not be as useful to list.
Magical
These minerals come from other Planes of Existence and therefore contain a higher concentration of magical power.
Brimstone
Brimstone, or Hell Rock, is what most of Hell is made of. In concentrated amounts it can have a powerful fiery effect. It can also be used to enhance sulfur and charcoal into a substance known as blackpowder. Weapons and enchantments using Brimstone tend to light things on fire.
Crystone
Crystone is deeply chilled bedrock found in the polar caps of Lendahnna as well as the depths of the Plane of Earth. This rock is cold to the touch and can be used in enchantments to freeze things as well.
Kilned Obsidian
Kilned Obsidian comes from the Plane of Fire. The volcanoes and fire there producing a double pressured and superheated obsidian. This rock possess the sharpness of Obsidian without the fragility. It can be used in many different capacities but is extremely hard to acquire.
Zephyrock
Zephyrock is a solid cloud form of mineral within the Plane of Air. It is lightweight and can be used to lift things with enchantments. It’s primary use on Lendahnna is to lessen the weight of heavier metals through careful enchantment.
Drowned Silt
Drowned Silt comes from the deepest depths of the Plane of Water. It gets its name because the silt itself slowly leaks water and will create it with only needing a small amount of errant magical power.
